Scanning and Restoring damaged B/W negatives

Hi,

I work for a small-town museum which received thousands of B/W negatives for our photo collections a few years back. We are now scanning the negatives using an Epson scanner and Photoshop 5.0/5.5 at 2400 bpi and saving them as jpeg photos. The negatives were not stored properly and several of them have scrunched-up (for lack of a technical term) areas which leave a rather ugly band on the scanned photo. My boss and I are somewhat PS knowlegable, but neither one of us know how to fix this. So I am wondering if this is a common situation that can be fixed; and we would like a tutorial, plug-in, or some other idea of how to tackle this problem. We would prefer an automated solution as there are hundreds of negatives with this problem.

I tried uploading a sample but exceeded the size limit.

TIA for any advice or suggestions.
Larry

Damaged Photos

Larry make a copy of one of the photos and resize it so that the largest dimension is 800 pixels. Use the save for web function in photoshop and then you should be to upload the file. I am sure that you will get several helpful suggestions.
