How'd they do that?

Check this out... I love this effect and would like to implement it in a Christmas gift I am preparing for my children. How is that effect done behind the little boy? It almost looks like it was sketched with charcoal.

I am not sure if this was how the pic was done, but I would probably attempt it as follows:-

1. Take Second Picture, duplicate it
2. Duplicate again and select image->Adjustments->Invert
3. Set blending mode of inverted image to colour dodge
4. Select Filter->Gaussian Blur and adjust the detail by using the blur slider
until you reach a satisfactory outcome.
5. Merge the layers into a new merged copy (new layer, Select All,
Edit->Copy merged, edit paste.
6. Image->Adjustment->DeSaturate.
7. As a final tweak adjust the opacity when you are overlaying it on the
main photo or in the frame

and I have one on the way

for a grand total of 8. The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned. I love my grandchildren. They give me the ability to see the world through "unjaded" eyes. I love that and their innocence. Children are precious and to be treasured. And I surely do treasure mine!
