nice, bert! you'd probably get a bit more response here if you posted the two originals separated to show the effect. i'd certainly be curious to see them.

thanks for the suggestion craig! here goes:

workflow:
merged in ps cs2
some cloning and blurring to neutralize remain edges
used levels and curves to improve overall saturation and contrast
usm
layermask with gradient sharpening of horizon
some additional burning on horizon and clouds
