ignoring you? i spend most of my day studying you! and if you didnt already have a boyfriend and i wasnt probably twice your age, i'd probably be on a plane to italy right this minute. ... oh, you probably meant ignoring that response you gave

all kidding (and mild to middling flirting aside), i do try to emulate your level of results. you set a standard that i would like to meet. i just happened to lose track of where that thread was/is. so, thank you

After creating Blank Layers and changing their Mode according to what I want to do, I just paint on them ...
that's what i was looking for. and yes, i've used that technique since you introduced me to it quite a while back. it's a very useful approach to blown out areas.

i'm a little curious here; couldnt one put a gradient mask on the woman's face and do a bit of selective painting to fill in where it's gone white? i know we've done this sort of thing in the past. wouldnt it work here also....or do i just need to go back and read the rest of that thread?

Craig

That is awesome Flora. I have to second what Craig said. I think a lot of us aspire to your skill set. You are very gifted when it comes to working with images and you are also a wonderful person!

Thanks so much!

Boy, you have all the hard ones here!

Im going to buy your friend a new cell phone!!

Heres a skin smooth attempt. Don't know if I got the skin color correct. I am so blond - that I tend to stereotype and make skin colors like me - what would I do colorwise to get this into your world? Would it be a bit more olive? Brown? You mentioned redish tones so I tried to head in that direction and darker. You could certainly educate me - how do I get the colors right? I would need to make another pass at it anyway to get the detail back in.

Ray you did great. The skin tones are simliar to the reference image I posted on page one of another baby that comes from this area. They are reddish/brown. But there is a bit of ash mixed in with the very newborn ones, like the subject of the image to be restored. Of course every baby is blotchyish when first born, but my friend wanted me to make the skin very smooth so the image looks nicer when she prints it for her sister.

I agree it is a very hard one to work with!

PS did you get my PM yesterday?

Ken, looks good.
I found that the Lighten and Darken layers worked really well to even the skin tone out more.

The color is pretty good too, maybe a bit less Magenta tho.

It's a really subjective call on the color as each baby is pretty different. I just went for a warmer brown and got rid of the pupleish, red and yellow hues.
