Recovering detail from shadows - how to Lighten Photo

I think that I know that it can't be done but it's certainly worth a post.

Is there any way that the blacks can be changed to reflect the real colors. My suit is gray while my grandson's tux is OK.

Hmm, I'm no expert but when I lightened the image the photographer's copyright or something starts to show up. I don't think there is anymore detail below your grandson's cuff as this is where the copyright starts (see attached).

albatross,

just use your eyedropper tool and move it around on the picture. if the numbers that show up are all 0 or very near 0 or all very low and close to each other, then about the only way to do what you want would be to hand paint things with your paint tools or use masks/selections and alter that way with other tools like curves and levels.
