How to remove shadow around beard

I would like to know how to remove the shadow around the beard of this person. I tried the clone tool but it came out too light and not smooth. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I'm trying to remove the shadow and make the color even like the rest of his face.

Re: How to remove shadow around beard

If you have Photoshop 7 or later, try a Selective Color adjustment layer -- First, select the area around the beard that you want to change and then add the Selective Color adjustment layer -- go to the Red channel and lower the Black slider (move to left) -- you may need to move the cyan and magenta down also (my numbers were Black -36, Cyan-28, Magenta -13. Then use the dropdown menu to choose the Neutrals and reduce the black by 12 or so, and then go to the Black channel and reduce Black by about 10. I needed to blur the adjustment layer when I was done to blend in with the rest of his face.

Re: How to remove shadow around beard

or if you want, you can brush them out, use your soft brush tool, and pick up the colours around the chin, then simply paint it out
