Fixing a strange texture on this old photo

I have also had cracked pictures like this and and want to have a go at the decrack filter. However, I am using photoshop elements 4 and am not sure which folder to put it in, Can anybody advise (Elements 4 does not appear to have an actions palete) Will it work in elements at all?

I was going to suggest NeatImage software (http://www.neatimage.com). I think NeatImage can fix this cracking issue without blurring the photo.

I understand, it was off topic because your post didnt have a real point. As Olbaldy said, if the problem was fixed there is not a need to bump old threads. But if you are going to do it, then say something worth while.

Now i am off topic...

But good sugestion on the neat image, thats some good software.

I've got neat image and I used it in conjunction with Photoshop elements 4 and it did indeed sort the cracking on my photo. It turned out mostly to be caused by textured paper. I only had to use the free download once to be convince it was worth buying!

Ah, the thread that wouldn't die...

In my case, I'm glad it resurfaced as I picked up the Decrack action and a worthwhile tip from Cameracken on layer shifting. Wish I knew more so that I could contribute. Perhaps someday.

In the meantime this site is proving to be a tremendous resource.

This is my shot at it in PaintShopPro XI

Two layers, the copy has a gaussian blur of 6 on it. Merge all layers, then fade correction 75%. Soft focus, and then sharpen up again with unsharp mask.

Okay then, here’s my offering on the original picture in this thread. I use Photoshop Elements 4.
1. Remove noise with the Remove Noise filter. Use the Dust And Scratches filter at a setting of 2. I’ve added Neat Image to my armory, and I now used that the default setting. I now cloned out a small amount of damage still visible on the background.
2.The colours looked a bit odd, so I now checked the Levels box and adjusted the RGB channels individually. This looked more natural, but I decided to add a small adjustment with Easy Filter Smart Curve, ( A free download which works with Elements) I lightened the picture slightly with a slight curve. Final touch – sharpen with Unsharp Mask at settings: Amount:17, Radius:19.7, Threshhold:0. Probably took about 5 minutes.

Set tones in curves. Used the Decrack action I found on this site a few days ago: ran it 3 times at .8 / .8 / 1.2. Then local contrast USM 8/50/0. Neat Image 30% Y. USM 120/1/10.

Heres a quick attempt. I used median filter to remove the noise and did a quick fix on color adjustments.
