Retouch taped photo

I recently scanned a photo which was once repaired with tape (see picture). Like to hear some suggestions on what the best way would be to fix this, either with the sepia colortone or in balck & white (grayscale).

Thanks

Re: Retouch taped photo

Hi there

I made a start at repairing your picture.
I made a selection of the tape area and using curves I matched the rest of the picture fairly close. I ctrl clicked on the dark area to set a point of adjustment but I also needed to move the endpoints to reduce contrast as well.

After I had the areas matched I used the healing brush and clone tool to clean up.

Re: Retouch taped photo

I gave this a try. Didn't come out quite as nice as Butch's, but I selected the tape and used the Hue/Sat - Yellow and reduced it down then the lightness to better match. From there healing brush, cloning. In the end I did a levels adjust for the contrast. Anyway--good practice.

Using Photoshop CS2 and a Wacom graphics tablet.

Re: Retouch taped photo

Nice one Butch. You can also use the set white/black point eyedroppers to get photoshop to do the curve for you--can be especially helpful with color photos.

Re: Retouch taped photo

had a go at this also. pretty much my standard routine. lighten/contrast, curves, polaroid d&s, clarify, clone, airbrush, smudge.

oops, forgot all about removing the tape mark. selected the bad area with a slight feather on the selection and used a hue/sat to adjust saturation and brightness to a near match. and then cloned the rest out.
