Craig,
I said I might be a while Thanks to all who volunteered their help, I've really enjoyed doing this, and trying all the suggestions, but I think this is as far as I want to take them. (it's a damn sight better than it was )
Again thankyou to all.....John

Re: Any document re-touchers please?

yup. that's pretty good. nice job!

being a bit of a fanatic on this stuff, i feel compelled to tell you that it could be done further (sorry, i'm like an old english teacher correcting every little iota of grammar). a little clone here and there on the discoloration and a bit of brush work on some of the lettering.... (yeah, i know. i'll shut up now ).

it really is MUCH better.

and thank you for posting the finished product

The mentioned color deconvolution plug-in is from 4N6site.com. Check out some examples here.
Previous posts contain outdated links, but the plug-in is available through 4N6site.com.
It's definitely not cheating: the plug-in applies the same processing to all the pixels in the image (or selection). In forensic science we would call using a brush cheating...

John's own original results were already impressive, and I think he was working with an uncompressed (and higher resolution) version. I applied the color deconvolution plug-in to work on legibility only of the posted JPEG, extracting the red and the black parts. As you see JPEG compression makes the letters less crisp in the result.

I did these from your original dark versions using the Color Deconvolution filter, a FREE PhotoShop plug-in for color separation from 4N6site.com ... took about 20 minuets and have done no other adjustments yet... I am sure with some tweaking your results could be much better.
