I am new at this and would like to get better, so what do folks think

Welcome aboard

You're off to a pretty good start. I took your finished version, selected the skin tones and jumped them to a new layer set to Multiply. Did a High Pass (sharpen) to bring out more detail and put a curves adjustment layer on top of it all.

I'm sure the retouching pros will have other suggestions.
