Photo Assistance

Hello Photoshop Gurus,

I was hoping if anyone could help me out with restoring a few old photos of my family. I feel bad for registering and immediately asking for help, however I have tried to restore them me self, but my skill level is not up to par as your guys as I’ve seen in other threads.

The first thing I’ve done since I got P-Shop was restoring these pictures.

I've basically used the clone tool for all of it, however the clone tool becomes very irritating as it does not want to work some times...it will give me a white faded look instead of cloning what i wanted?! You'll see this in my attempt in the first image.

First image: is a picture of my mother, brother and me. The left eye of my mother has been torn. My only picture of me from when I was a baby.
Also, I scanned these images, I’m not sure how I can reduce the canvas size to exactly the size of the picture, so its just the picture showing and it doesn't look like I scanned it?

Original: http://img412.imageshack.us/my.php?i...3239583dk5.jpg

My attempt: http://img375.imageshack.us/my.php?i...ditcopyvv8.jpg

Second image: is of my fathers family with his sisters their husband, and his parents. I had a difficult time with this one espically trying to remove the blue, but was happy with my what i was able to do.

Original: http://img206.imageshack.us/my.php?i...inalpicda5.jpg

My Attempt:http://img54.imageshack.us/my.php?im...fiedpicmc5.jpg

If some of you could possible show me what you can do, I would greatly appreciate it. If you could also briefly describe how you did it, as I’m not only here for help, but I’d also like to learn.

My Next project is of a very old family photo with all family members (9 kids!), I’m hoping that i can print these pictures and replace them with the old ones.

Wow, thanks! That's alot better than mine. I can see that you adjusted the levels and filterd the image, correct? Im assuming for the eye that you did a free transform of the right side, but how did you do the left eyebrow?

Re: Photo Assistance

The right eye is a large selection of the left eye and eyebrow. Used the lasso tool the select the area and then Transform>Flip Horizontal. After placement it was blended into the photo. Ran the picture through Focus Magic to just slightly adjust the sharpness. Adjusted the contrast also. Replaced the first picture I did with a slightly sharpened photo displayed in comparison to the original image that was retouched.

Re: Photo Assistance

4re, I did give the second image a try, but ran into problems with red splotches in the skin tones and did not have any further time to work on the problem so I did not save the results. Sorry.

dc

Here is a very quick try. Good retouching begins with the scanning process that might be able to correct some of the problems. Skan at a high dpi, do your retouching and then downsample your image. What I did was:

-color adjustment
-made some attempt to remove some of the dust and scratches
-and repair the damage in the center of the picture.

To do a serious job of retouching, I believe you would need a hi-res image. Numerous retouching issues remain in regards to this picture I posted.
