My first restoration

Hi everyone!

My name is Amy, and I am a 37-year-old artist living in Niagara Falls, NY. I have become the caretaker of many of the old photos for both sides of my family, and one of the things I have really been looking forward to is using my artistic abilities and computer knowledge to digitally restore many of them. I probably have enough that are in need of help to last me a lifetime!

Anyway, I was finally able to sit down and have a go at my first one. I chose this photograph of my great-grandmother from 1962. It was taken on the occasion of hers and my great-grandfather's Golden Anniversary.

There were many issues with this photo... discoloration, creases, splotches, possible water damage... and worst of all, some rascal had taken ball point pen to it and drew "glasses" on poor grandma!

I'm pretty happy with the job I did, but I may go back and try it again, we'll see. I'm anxious to work on others, too, so... it will probably wait. I'm looking forward to getting feedback and learning lots from everyone here!

(I work in Photoshop CS, btw. Since I am a beginner, I use lots of the rubber stamp and healing tools, desaturation, cloning, light/contrast adjustment. Plus, probably most importantly, lots of patience, a willingness to take my time, and good attention to detail.

See what you think!

NOTE: You can also go to my Flickr account for larger versions of these... I am still on the learning curve for getting the file sizes just right for optimal viewing here! http://www.flickr.com/photos/agreenan

We can't save the picture in Flickr to work on it, only view it.

Oh, I am sorry! I'm still figuring this stuff out and just wanted some feedback... Is there another place I should post this?

Way to make an impression with my first post... :P

... Well, IMO, that covers at least 80% of what is needed for digital restorations jobs...

Re: My first restoration

In CS when you go to save, Save for Web. There is a toggle arrow above the Quality. Open it. There you will see "optimize to file size", set it for 100K. Click ok. CS will optimize it for you. Save. And then post.

Re: My first restoration

Flora,

Thanks for the kind feedback. I'm finding this kind of work really addicting! I do graphic design for a living and could see myself tacking this type of thing on eventually, too. (I am a painter otherwise, but have to support myself somehow!)

KlassyLady25, I will follow your tip for posting images. I appreciate your help!

Amy

Re: My first restoration

Candice,

Same problem here...just save the whole page containing the picture as .html file, the image will be in the folder saved with it..(should be named something like '.... _files')...

Amy,

No problem at all... you surely made the right impression already!!! ...

Due to the 100KB limit for attachments here at RetouchPRO, it's very useful to be able to upload full size images somewhere else just in case you would like people here to work on them, but please, keep on posting the images here as well... It can be frustrating getting to an interesting Thread only to realize that the image is not there any longer... (for Size, Quality and/or Format of Attached Images just follow the second link under my signature)

Is there a way to download the images directly from Flickr?

Flora and others,

I've gone ahead and changed the licensing on Flickr for that photo so that it can be downloaded and worked on. There are several different file sizes to be had.

Thanks again!

Amy
