I deleted the message with the original photo so I could post this one with the original photo and a second one with improvements, following your advice.

Not only the red channel, but the green also showed some banding. After selecting most of the sky with the banding, I applied Gaussian blur in each channel until the banding smoothed out. The result is what you see in the second photo.

I cropped out the smudge on the right.

BTW, can you or anyone suggest how to correct the haze effect on the mesas?
