First Restoration

I'm taking a class at the moment and one of our assignment was to restore a photo, so I scanned in an old relative's picture. I'm by no means a beginner with Photoshop but this was my first stab at restoring a photo. Any good?

Very good so far ! It's always hard to decide where to begin and where to end....especially for a class. You have to stop, usually before you want.

I think the clothing is just about right and the background is very close to where you want it. The face though needs some more detail brought out. The whites are blown out. It could be hard, depending on the original. You may have to actually brush in some tone there.

I'm assuming the overall color cast is something you may have added. If so, fine. If not, many of us still prefer the sepia tone... it's just a personal preference. One way to bring back the original sepia tone (rather than create one) is to copy the original layer to the top most, change the blend mode to color and alter the opacity until you get the color tint you like.

Otherwise, great job and keep it going !

This was a quick try. I duplicated the layer setting the layer to multiply. Then added a mask (black) and painted with white limiting the change of the multiply layer to the area of the face that would enhance the left eye (facing the pic.). There are experts that probably have many more and better ideas. I am not a professional retoucher so I just experiment.

The rest of the picture looks very nice.

You could try to use the blue channel.

You can also try to use the Channel Mixer set on Monochrome. You get nice rich blacks without the unsightly green or purple tones.
