Help With Restoration and Color

Hi, I posted this question at another forum and they recommended me here.
I looked around briefly and it looks like I can learn a lot from these forums.
but until then I will submit my first question.

I am not very good at restoring photos. But a friend came to me and asked if I could help restore a picture of his girlfriend.

I scanned his picture here... Before His girlfriend is in the mothers arms.

Now I know this isn't great work. But for my first time, this is what I came up with... After

He had one comment and that is why did the eyes look racoonish

I explained to him that it was shadows caused by the Sun directly above.

I'm not sure if there is much more I could do? But now he is wondering what a colorized version would look like?

So, I thought I would give it a try using color overlay. But no matter what I do, I just cant seem to get a decent look.

Can anyone help? and if so could you please explain what your process was.

Thanks in Advanced.

Anthony

Anthony,
Kraellin always says start by finding your image. That is what I did here. I opened in raw and made a few minor adjustments, then in photoshop I used curves to bring back the contrast without adding too much contrast, just brought in the sliders until I started clipping each channel. I used shadow highligths to bring out the eyes. I used black and white to take out the junk (it's all in yellow). Now I would start your retouch and stay away from auto functions like reduce noise and other filters that blur.

Re: Help With Restoration and Color

anthony, welcome to RP.

the posted image is quite small and of a very low resolution. this makes it more difficult to work on the image with any precision. so, the first advice is to increase the image size and resolution.
