This appears to be a picture from a document. You did not mention why you wanted to alter the picture. Interesting to try different things to remove the lines. I do a lot of work with documents.

ah yes another broken english user.. possible conartist yes? If it were a relative I'm sure he'd have a lot of other pictures to choose from. Why one that looks like an ID?

Re: How to restore this photo with Stamp on it

The parts where the damage is darker than the good parts, use the clone tool on lighten blend made and work from the darker good parts towards the lighter so that the good skin isn't touched. Lighten blend mode means that if it is lighter it is used, if the source is darker than the destination that pixel is not used.

The reverse can be used carefully in the opposite areas. The rest is careful work, but the lighten/darken blend modes will make it much quicker and easier.

Healing tool won't work because it will average the two brightnesses.

Thanks for the info Roger!
Mine was beginning to look like a very bad painting before I read your post and tried it

Slow like D&B but effective.. works like a charm!

I hope dunnolah has a lot of patience, because this seems like the way to go

Re: How to restore this photo with Stamp on it

Dear All,

Thank you for the help and many question about why I need to correct sucg photo.

Yes the photo is from an old Passport which one of my friend pass to me. They would like me to help and restore it so they can use it during a Chinese praying for the death.

As the person on the photo is no longer with them and this is the only photo which they can find, so I think is alright to help a bit.

If you all think I am a conartist then be it. As I also don't know any of you. I just need to help and learn new way to use photoshop to help people.

What does "use the clone tool on lighten blend made and work from the darker good parts towards the lighter so that the good skin isn't touched. Lighten blend mode means that if it is lighter it is used, if the source is darker than the destination that pixel is not used." mean?

Thank you all again for the time and post.

I was really talking about areas like the forehead where the damage is darker and the good skin is lighter.

Always duplicate the layer so you have the original image with the damage on the background layer untouched. Do your work on the duplicate layer.

Maybe this will be clearer.

Use the clone tool on lighten blend mode - You know what the clone tool is because you mentioned it ... blending mode is in the tool options palette next to opacity for the brush. Set the blending mode to lighten.

Working from the dark to the light - means, just being aware of the good areas only - alt-click a spot where the good skin in between the damage is slightly darker, click near it where the good skin between the damage is slightly lighter. Notice that the good skin hasn't changed brightness, but the darker damage has lightened. This is because of the lighten blend mode where only a those pixels that would be rendered lighter by the clone are used.

In Photoshop there are at least ten ways to do anything, with rarely one 'right' way. This technique is one quick way to rough in the general tone wanted in smooth areas such as the forhead.

Hope this helps,
Roger

Re: How to restore this photo with Stamp on it

1st step : Gimp FFT filter, bluring some zones, then inverse FFT filter.

2nd step : Wire Pilot (the free version)

3rd step : Photoshop 5, mostly luminosity and hue brushing. Couple of clone brushed spots in the hairs.

Took a couple of hours and I think it is not too bad. It would still need a bit of further retouching IMO as everything is not 100% right.
