Auto healing / filling up holes.

Are there any plug-ins or actions that help heal holes made by removing a photo from an item? Like a plug-in that intelligently clones the edges inwards to shrink a hole?

none that i'm aware of. interesting idea, though. best thing i know of is to clone from all around the hole towards the middle.

You might try Alien Skin's Image Doctor 2 - Smart Fill. They do offer a 30 day trial.

Re: Auto healing / filling up holes.

There are also quite a few image completion-inpainting standalone applications around. Most are free and their performance/stability varies.

That's a quite good one albeit rather slow :

And if you are willing to to remove holes by resizing the image, you may want to have a look at seam carving utilities. There are quite a few around as well. Most are also free.

Re: Auto healing / filling up holes.

The MSU Plug-in produced a weird mosiac fill pattern.
Trying out Image Completion now (but you are right, it's really sloooow. It's been working on a 500x500 image for over 30 minutes!)

Image Doctor looks really promising... and it's the only one available for Mac.
