I was just invited to post something, as I never have before (too much of a skulker I suppose, but have benefited). I do have a question, though. I was recently asked to restore a b/W Group photo from the 1920's. I don't have it w/ me to post but it's a school pictore. Every soul on the pic must have 100 or more little white dust specs. This is a gratis job, and I can get it by hand, but it's going to take many hours. Any quick and easy way in CS3?

based on your description of 'little white dust specs', i'd look at "Poloraroid Dust & Scratches" filter. it excels at that sort of thing.

If the spots are small and they are all white the photoshop dust and scratches filter should do a good job of it. Duplicate the layer apply D&S at whatever it takes to get rid of the grot. The image will be fairly blurred by now. Change mode to darken. That might be a fix. If the blur affects too many light features put a conceal mask on the layer and paint the dust out with a white brush ( paint on the mask ) since you are using darken mode you don't have to be to accurate with the brush.

In the end, the Polaroid Dust & Scratch Remover didn't take enough out. There were portions of the print that looked like the cracked surface of a dry clay lakebed and several deep scratches in the emulsion. The whole picture required so much hand work that the dust became an incidental. It was just one of those pics you have to finish. It was for a 14 yr old that had lost her Grandmother.

I learned a lot on this one. The biggest lesson is this may not be the best endeavor for someone suffering from mild OCD. I do appreciate the help given. I love this website.
