Mileage varies from baby to baby just as skin quality varies in adults. Taste and what the "market" considers acceptable also comes into it. Just look at all the plastic women on magazine covers. However, babies, especially fair skinned babies are usually a bit blotchy in real life. The attached is a not very good quality crop of someone's baby, but I think you can see what I mean. Note the even tone of the ball, so it is not a problem with the camera, film, lighting, etc.
