Old photo - how to fix skin

First, let me say that I'm so pleased to have found this forum. I've been doing projects in Photoshop for a while, but recently began serious restoration for OPR, a great NPO, as a volunteer.

I'm working on a photo now, and would like some help and feedback, if you're willing.

I'm a rank amateur, but I'd like to know what you think, and also, if you have suggestions on evening out the man's complexion. His face is too splotchy, and not like the original photo used to be, I think. In fact, his face in the damaged original looks better at this point...

Many thanks in advance.

PS - I'm using PS3 - EDIT: I meant, PS CS3!

Re: Old photo - how to fix skin

I think you're doing a fine job on that image.
I was unable to reveal much more detail on the face or shirt. I'm thinking the facial contrast has more to do with the overall contrast, grain and comparison to the shirt. But, you know they actually had darker skin in those days, in many instances due to farming, etc... out in the sun a lot. The blotches seem to just be bad image data, as you suspected.

Obviously, working with the higher res image would be better. But, you may still have to grab a patch of the face and create a texture from it to use on the other areas. And of course, a little bit of clone, smudge or light painting to get it all right. Zooming in on the thumbnail, it appears there could be a little paper texture there too. But, it is very hard to tell at the low resolution.

Best of luck and congrat's on that volunteer work !

I sort of went with Tommy's suggestions. I did the face only and put it on your restored version. Still somewhat splotchy, but I think the darker complexion helps.

Re: Old photo - how to fix skin

Thanks TommyO and Juergen.

The original photo is not low res so I have more info to work with. I like the darker complexion, Juergen. I will take TommyO's advice and darken the skin. Also, I will make resize the ear and apply a light sepia tone...
