Restore a badly damaged sepia photo

My wife recently came across a picture of herself as a baby with her Mother, taken in in Ireland during the war.

It was in a terrible condition; had been wet at some time, and has tears, splits & a myriad of cracks on the surface; (just like an old oil painting).

She asked me to try to restore it, but I am not happy with my poor efforts. Perhaps someone here can kindly help.

Re: Restore a badly damaged sepia photo

Hi Anchor and welcome to RP! How have you tried to restore the image so far. What areas did you have trouble with? What types of damage did you have difficulty with (cracks, stains, etc)? Can you show us what you have done so far?
Regards, Murray

It will take a lot of cloning and healing. And working with curves and levels. You're lucky because the two faces are in good shape.
The two people can also be put on a new background saving you a lot of work on the walls/curtains.

Clone Stamp and Spot Healing Brush, Spot Healing Brush and Clone Stamp. I still don't have a clue what should be in the white area by the hands. Cropping in saves some work on the background.

The original sepia was removed and then some was put back at the end.

Re: Restore a badly damaged sepia photo

Thanks for your replies. You may care to see the results that I obtained. I first changed it to B/W, and after working on it reverted to sepia.
