Don't you hate it when:

You spend 3 hours on a project, so engrossed that you forget to save, and JUST when you think it's dang near perfect.......

THIS PROGRAM HAS PERFORMED AN ILLEGAL FUNCTION!

Arrrrrrrrgh. I am never going to get this one done......

Am I the only one who gets that deep into the process? Anyone else here occasionally forget to save? Or am I really becoming senile?

Been there - done that! I've been trying to remember to save fairly often, but yes, that happens to me too on occasion.

I try to blame it on being a human being, but I've about worn that one out.

Aw, heck. I learned that in kindergarten...

Trick is to remember to push the buttons... LOL

What I really need is a keeper to rattle my cage every few minutes and shout, "Save yer work ya big doof!"

Ugh - when I had my smaller disk, the PS scratch file would fill up my disk after just a few changes - I had to learn to save very often! But, now that I have my bigger disk, I admit I get very engrossed in what I'm doing and can go for 45 minutes without realizing it (esp. with cloning.) I've thought about getting myself a digital kitchen timer - the one that keeps the last timer setting - so that I can set it at 10-15 minutes and have it go off to remind me to save - and to take a deep breath.

Wouldn't it be nice if Adobe P.S. reminded you about saving. Like some word programs that microsoft has. I see "that" would be on a lot of peoples wish list for the next version...........Just like spell check in 7.

Good suggestion to mention to Adobe John. Jak you're not the only one. I do the same thing and I know better. Trouble is you get so involved in what you're doing you loose track of time and how much you've done until it's too late. Happens repeatedly. Also forgetting to save before trying some lengthy process that eats up your history states only to decide you didn't like it. UGH. I try to make snapshots but even that I forget sometimes.

It's a poor substitute, but I simply cultivated a knee-jerk response to that little asterisk on the menubar so that whenever I notice it (in any app) I hit ctrl-s.

That only happens to me about 3-4 times a week...on the bright side, having to redo everything is a great way to really learn how to most effectively plan a restore/retouch job in advance and what steps to take and in what order.....having done something once and tried out all the dead ends, doing it a second time and hopefuly avoiding the "potholes" is a useful exercise....Tom

Well, I think I've found the answer to the problem!

I went looking around and found an alarm clock for my desktop. I set it to chime every 10 minutes, and I just hit Ctrl-S whenever it chimes! Seems easy enough (duh, Jak!).

While I was looking around I also found a contract timer that seems promising. It's to keep track of time spent on jobs (or challenges). You can get it HERE

I do agree with you, Tom, about learning to recreate things. That is one way to make lemonade, as they say. And I've made a heck of a lot of lemonade, let me tell you!

But for some reason, I never like the recreation as much as the one I lost... Maybe it is because of that trial and error part - a pinch of this and a pinch of that just makes a little better stew. Like when I try to make my mom's best dishes. Mine are technically ok, but they just never taste as good as MOM'S! LOL

There are programs out there, shareware and freeware, that you can set to issue any command to any program at any interval. download.com would be a good source. But I can imagine some instances where saving would actually be a bad thing.

Actually, the one I got just chimes every xxx minutes at whatever increments you set, so you just have to remember to set it once when you start the computer. Now, if I can just remember that.... LOL

Yeah Doug, I can imagine times when saving automatically would be a bad thing too...
