A scanner is nice if you are doing a job with only a few pictures. But remember that the scanning process takes a lot of time. When I inherited literally thousands of family photos, scanning was no longer a viable option. The task was accomplished in a fraction of the time by setting up a lighting system made possible by going to the local hardware store and purchasing those lights that come with a clamp on one end and a shiny bowl surrounding the bulb. Photographers are notorious for jury rigging; and I'm all for that. In this case, it worked with a little diffusing of the bright lights and a long extension cord. Mission accomplished.
