Posting Layer images, psd etc.

I sometimes like to post a psd image for explanation.
Where or how do you do that here?

Lisa, after reading the thread of avatars, I decided a face and name was the way to go.

Greg, I forgot to mention, when you upload the zip file it can’t be over 100k.

Not easy even in zip form to fit a PSD file with layers that is big enough to actually see within 100 kb.

Don't I know it. It seems pretty weird to me, to have a site that seems to be aimed at PS and not be able to have decent size images(Doug).
When working, my images are 3 to 10 meg., and I don't really do big. That's not big. Uno they don't have to keep em' forever, just a few months and then d/l.
I think I'll do like I've been doing over in the PSP NG, and thats post em' to alt.binaries.comp-graphics. You can put anything you want over there. Would the folks here be able to get to a News Group or would that through them a curve.

There's an easy answer to that. Money This is still a pretty small group here and apart from donations from generous members, it really doesn't have a steady income and there are no annoying ads here paying for things. So Doug pretty much has to do what he can with the funds he has. As the membership grows in time things will improve. You should have seen it about a year ago. Much different, there have been alot of improvements since then. But I know what you mean. Sometimes the questions you have deal with the layers or blend modes and you can't show the file to see if others can see what's wrong.

Actually I was here that long ago, I joined in 2 of the early challenges, one with a goldfish and one with a duck. I just couldn't get into the place or all the old pics to restore. To me, one old photo is enough for a life time.

I personally don't think it's that odd. The only time I need a good sized image is when I'm actually working on it or if I want to display it. But IMHO, just to look at someone else's image and answer questions about it or give advice - it doesn't need to be that big at all. Just a JPEG big enough to see what you're referring to.

The last 2 , only 2 images I have posted here, both lost a bunch of detail because I had to screw around trying to make them fit some arbitrary number. Thats why.

Greg - About half the people in this forum still use 56k or less (myself included), so very large images and .psd files would probably not go over very well, especially for people who are literally paying for internet access by the minute.

I do agree that compressed jpegs are not always the best solution, but there are some ways around it. You can always post cropped sections of larger images in order to show detail. You could also take a screen shot of your layers in order to help explain a particular image.

Look, I'm not trying to be a turd, I just don't like to compromise on art. I just posted a big zip on a NG. It's for learning the technique I have used for painting. Perhaps is useful, perhaps not.

And for those in rural Montana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, etc. who are lucky to get 28K (and yes, some of them do still have to pay by the minute - I know I do when I'm traveling in Viet Nam), the large files are truly unworkable.

I think Greg has a good idea about posting just sections of a file to show detail where you need to. I've also found that using the "Save for Web" feature in PS performs some "magic" more than just saving as a low-quality JPEG. Somehow using that gets me a better looking file in a smaller file size than I'm able to just saving as a JPEG with low quality. Granted, you still can't post layers, but it does seem to help some with image quality.

And, just for the record, I'd have no problem viewing images on alt.binaries.comp-graphics. That being said however, it's really better (for this forum) to have images loaded here whenever possible because a lot of the threads are meaningless for viewers later on without the images to refer to. (I've run into a few old threads where the images were posted to people's websites which no longer exist and I've been really bummed because I could have gotten a lot more out of the thread if I'd been able to view the image.)

I was not trying to imply that! I think it's good to try and present your work in the clearest and most detailed form, but unfortunately, compromise is the nature of the beast. Most of my digital art is destined for a Giclee printer, so any representation of that work beyond the actual print is a compromise... I don't think Doug would appreciate me trying to upload a 350 mb PSD file!

This is an interesting topic and there is no easy answer, since bandwidth is still a very limited thing. Like Jeanie, I have no problem using newsgroups to find an image, but as she mentioned, it's a temporary thing.

Maybe you could post both an attachment (as we do now), and also put a link if someone would like to follow it. Doug has said before that he is not really in favor of links because they go to link heaven in due time. But I doubt if he would have a problem with it if the attachment were included to stay on this site. I probably shouldn't be talking for Doug, but that's my understanding of how he wants the site to be. I don't have a problem with links, but I think we need to respect his wishes at the same time.

How do you post a psd?
I like Giclee(funny name though) I have ambitions in that direction too. I do some of my stuff with a paper or canval bckgrnd to simulate it, and it doesn't look too bad on plain paper.
350meg? How big is that 10' wide?
