Re: Need advice on restoring an old picture

Ih014,
Welcome to RP !
I hate to jump to conclusions, but the image lacks a lot of important detail. This makes fixing the image more of an artistic recreation, and less of a restoration. Fortunately, there is enough detail for our brain to imagine what it should look like, and thus recreate it to match. We often use various parts from other images whether from the same family or not. An eye brow is an eye brow, and Photoshop does allow us to tweak these parts enough to fit the persons face. Same goes for suit jackets, ties, etc.

Re: Need advice on restoring an old picture

I am afraid TommyO is right. I tried but wow, its not a simple task.
Nan might be able to get a better shot than I did. I got carried away using tool after tool and now its all messed up but I thought Id post it any way just to show an idea and maybe give others a push to try!

Re: Need advice on restoring an old picture

Thanks for the push Kate. I did work on it for several hours today and yes it's more artistic. I used a lot of clone, smudge and more clone along with curves adjustments. Also some dodge and burn. Then did a couple of high pass sharpens and added noise.
The jacket is a mess I didn't even try to get that right and I couldn't really figure the nose out.
This one was a real challenge but fun.
Nan

Why thank you Kate. You know I'm still learning. There are just some I can do and some I can't.

Re: Need advice on restoring an old picture

You have the knack!
This one is a cant for all that's what makes it interesting to see the different minds eye on it. I too worked for hours and I too couldnt figure the nose, I tried to search noses to clone but none seemed to be right
I wish others would try, it breaks my heart to see a photo that cant at least be tried to fix.

Re: Need advice on restoring an old picture

lh014, Welcome to RetouchPRO Hope you enjoy your stay here and make lots of friends.

Is it possible to re-scan in color with all auto settings turned OFF.. and at the highest resolution possible for your scanner.. Also, when in PS7 use the "Save for Web" option.. make sure optimized is checked and click the little arrow just above the word "Optimized" and when the menu opens click on "optimize to file size".. another box will open where you should enter 99 in the box click "OK".. make sure that the file is now under 100K (if not then cancel .. return to edit mode and reduce the size a small amount and try again till the file gets under 100K) click "Save" and give your file an unique name then post this larger file here..

if you want to post the larger resolution that is over 100K then you can host your image elsewhere and attach a link, but also please attach an under 100K version here (so the thread remains useful in the future, regardless of external links).

For further Info on how to size and attach images to your posts

After you post your less than 100K version here, you could also post a larger version at ImageVenue.com (3Meg max, free) or pixentral.com (2Meg max, free) or photobucket.com (1 Meg max free,... 5 Meg PRO)-- then post a link here in this thread to the site that is hosting your larger version.

Re: Need advice on restoring an old picture

I took a good hard look at this photo, I like the restorations that presented themselves, however they seem to lack that "natural" look so I gave it a try
