Color Photo Restoration

Hello.

I am looking for some tips on how to begin the process of restoring a color photo that has been damaged by water (?) leaving yellowish splotches over the entire photo. I've attached a crop of the original image that I am working on.

I am using Gimp so some tips concerning that software would be appreciated

Thank You!!!

Sorry - Didn't realize the file size was too large for the forum. This should do it!

Re: Color Photo Restoration

not perfect needs more work, the blue and green channels are really bad. i used a channel mixer layer, then several selective color layers, and added color back to the arm on the right side of the woman holding the baby and the cyan for the color of the other arm at the right side of the photo.

Re: Color Photo Restoration

I use photoshop CS3 , opened in lab mode first used neat image to clean a bit of the noise then used adjustment layers of levels , hue/saturation and colour balance then flattened the image changed to RGB used selective colour , levels and hue/saturation again.Maybe someone a bit more knowledgable will help you with gimp.Unfortunately i,m pretty new at this so not sure if i work the right way round lol.

Re: Color Photo Restoration

Ran an FFT filter first to clean the image up some, then used several selective color adjustments to remove the yellow blotches. After that I use the dodge and burn tools to add a little bit of detail back into the facial features.

Does anyone know if there is a plugin for GIMP that would recreate the effects of neat image in Photoshop?

Re: Color Photo Restoration

The first version is the original desaturated. You can see that almost all the spots are gone. I than removed a bit of noise. Then I colored using the original as a guide. I like to hand paint, but many can do very well using gradients.

Re: Color Photo Restoration

I corrected image in the LAB and when added details to the image and colored it, finally adjusted curves and added shadows with burn tool.
Thanks, Kirill.
