What year is photo please help

Hello All,

I am colourizing the photo below and would like a more precise colour if possible for the wallpapers, armchair, capet and the childrens' clothing, I make the photo to be around 1050s but I am not very sure.

I think the colors you have now are pretty much right on (maybe a masked multiply layer to darken them a bit) and my guess is 1955

I would say mid late '50s; Pretty good job, might need to tweak it a bit, Not bad tho

Agreed: darken the colors a tad or two. The whole image, actually. And flatten the colors a bit (except the skin tones): desaturate by e.g. 20% or 30%. In the 1950's (it could have been me sitting on that couch) color tastes were decidedly less vibrant than today, a half century later.

well, it's not the 40's. and i'd also say not the early 50's. i agree with the others about mid to late 50's and maybe early 60's, but very early. those button over shoes put it in the late 50's or early 60's, and the white socks on everyone is definitely a 50's thing. the couch could be from the 40's or 50's. the flooring is too tough for me to tell, but the back wall could be late 50's or early 60's.

but, what i find most fascinating about this photo is, he is wearing the same shoe type as she is. now, that's 50's!

Thank you very much for your reply it is mucn appreciated, I guessed it was the 50s but wasn't sure I shall tweak more with the photos as I have only worked on the skin tones.

Thank you very much for your reply much appreciated, yes I agree apart from the kin tones the rest need desaturated a tad, i've only concentrated so far on the skin tones but wanted to make sure about the rest of furnitures, walls etc.

Thank you very much for your reply much appreciated, yes I've guessed the 50s as well but somehow was pretty undecided, I will tweak about with the rest apart from the skin tones because the girl's far right her dress as been bothering me.

I think it is a good testament to your coloring that no one has mentioned it.. In this case silence could be interpreted as " It looks good to me!"... that would include the girls dress ... But, if it will make you a happy camper.. Change it if you must!

Just a hint (and I am being very picky!).. you might want to hit the color layer on the dress with a touch of Gaussian to blend it a bit.. and check the edges of the yellow.. other than that ..I think you are off to a great start and doing very good!

Thank you very much for your reply and for the sample dresses, are you saying the colour i've aldready used apart from the adjustment of the girls' dresses are ok, I am re-colouring the armchair at the moment and perhaps will re-colourize everything else and leave the skin tones intact, I've colourized the photo quickly just to show the client the skin tones, she is very happy with everything. I will use similar colour but perhaps less saturated, if you all don't mind I will upload the final photos for more critiques

OOPS!
This thread is a good example of why Doug prefers for everyone to also attach an under 100K version of their picture so the thread remains useful in the future, regardless of external links.

The link in the first post is already dead and people have nothing to compare the coloring changes with and have to read all the way to post #14, to yet another link.... to have any idea of what they are trying to date

Sorry I had hiccups with my flickr account yesterday, I have altered the original post and put a new link using my pbase gallery the photo should now be shown. I find posting at 100k the image is pretty small and you don't get the full impact of seeing the image in it's original size therefore it's hard to judge.

I hope all is in working order and welcome any critiques. The client is very happy with both photos so I think I will send them to print I shan't change anything. I would like to thank you all who gave me critiques it is appreciated and they are valuable.
