Just wanted to get back to this, have been sick. I worked on this last night, but nothing really better to display. My plan of attack is to segregate the differently lit areas and work on them separately.

I don't have the original. Had done some reading about UV lighting etc.. will see if my friend (owner of the original photo) can take some more photo shots of this.

The mentioned color deconvolution plug-in is indeed from 4N6site.com. Check out some examples there.
First and foremost: make scans of documents, not photographs. Second: do not use JPEG (compression) if you expect to need subtle color information, as it is the first thing compression will throw out. Third: always remember that good image processing will only remove (unwanted) information, not add what's not there. Unless you want fiction of course!
