colorizing an old black and white photo

I have an old photo that I would like to recolor. I read a tutorial on how to recolor a black and white photo. it works well except that I have 2 problems.

1.on one part of the photo, on half the arm the color does not work. it stays white. i don't know if that was a flash or just lighting that caused it.

2. on the lips if I apply "lipstick" most of the lips look good but one corner is real dark. I tried lowering the opacity but it doesn't help

any suggestions would be of great help. the person is just looking to see some color. I cannot upload the photo as it isn't mine so I do realize that may limit you

I use photoshop elements

Try working in CMYK. Lasso an area, create a new layer, and work with the individual area.

Re: colorizing an old black and white photo

thanks but CMYK is not in Photoshop elements

I am a complete newbie at this so baby step would be much appreciated. I am using this as a learning process in case i ever get a scanner and want to fix my own photos. I don't ever expect to get to the level I see in restoration photos posted here. This just needs to look passable but as I siad i don't know how to fix the ultra white part of the arm or the dark end of the lips so it matches the rest of the lips.

fitst i used healing brush/spot healing to reduce white specks.
oh this is how i am coloring -
then for each body part to recolor i use solid fill adjustment layer. set blend mode to color. invert the mask and and paint in that area. I cannot use color balance as it is not in PSE

Posting a picture would give others the opportunity to see what you're talking about.
