I worked on the little boy from the original and then added your cleaned up background. I think just making the shadows softer and lighter helps get rid of the look you disliked. You did a very nice job on this overall and the background is great.
Reducing this has blurred it.

This might be too dark or light. I had to do a recovery on my computer and haven't got my monitor back to normal yet.

The perspective on the wall is wrong, both the 'middle' wall and the 'right' wall (the one at right angles.

It could be made a lot better with little effort by masking the boy from the image and rotating the background, might involve a little 'infill' in the corners, nothing drastic though.
