the lighter almost faded discoloration at the top i would imagine would be a good start but I am unsure as to how to go about fixing that, suggestions gang?

Re: faded top half

To a copy of the BG, apply the Green channel in normal blend mode. Duplicate the resulting layer and add a layer mask. Apply a black to white linear gradient to the mask (top being white) and change the blend mode to Multiply. A sample attached -I stopped there. The sample is severely pixelated. Hopefully you have a good quality scan.
After that, normal cloning / healing, shadow highlight or curve adj to brighten, and sharpen at the end.

Re: faded top half

I copy that, but why a green channel, how do you know that just from the start?

Re: faded top half

If you look at the channels you will see that Blue has much damage and is of no use. Red was not bad but had a lot of splotches on one man's trousers. Green looked cleanest and had reasonably good tone.

Re: faded top half

And, as a general rule, the green channel usually contains the most detail.

Just went to B&W, fiddled with the colours, Neat Image, high pass overlay.

Converted to B&W then used selective curves layers and various blending modes to adjust the lighting, contrast, etc. I added a darker vignette, color tone and sharpened. In most cases, the effects were added to duplicate layers via layer masks and that way, controlling the areas to be effected.

Re: faded top half

Mainly used darken/lighten brush along top half.
Blurred then added noise to left side wall.
Removed some scratches.

Attached sepia and color versions.

Re: faded top half

I played with a combination of Multiply and Screen layers, darkening brush, Curves and Levels. Used green channel only.
