Retouching & drawing the age lines

Hello my friends.
One of the most difficult resoration or retouch is the one we find sometimes when the subject is an elder person. Old people´s face is like a map, filled with lines and spots. Age lines are everywhere.
Well, the main problem when are retouching this kind of images with some plugins or painting the whole picture, like I´m doing, is the fact that the final job shows a person much more younger, with very soft age lines and a 20 years old skin.
The most incredible age lines I´ve been seeing some time ago were exposed in www.worth1000.com. Some guy, don´t remember the name, was taken famous people and put them older, some 40-50 years more. Was funny but also I thought, this could be a master class for those who are retouching and want to learn how to. I´ve been learning and will be learning the good things all my life. Is the only way to improve your work. Nobody is perfect.

This very closeup samples I´ve been uploading for you today had the following workflow:

1. a very small picture, some 3x4 cm of this native grandmother was scanned in RGB / 2400 dpi. because of the dress, i was forced to restore it with the original colors.
2. i opened it in photoshop. however, it still was too small and y changed the wide to 4 inch. i didn´t croped it, let this for the final step, just look for a pleasent size to let me work.
3. adjust some curves / levels. i painted it all and of course she get back in time, looked like some 35 years old lady.
4. now, the only tools which can do the decent age lines are dodge and burn. brush size was 15 - 25 pixels, hard border, 7 - 12% opacity so, with a lot of patience, we´ll use both, drawing the lines in the specific areas (always looking an original copy sample) which are mainly arround the eyes, mouth, cheeks, neck etc. with the burn tool i made some bigger lines and some spots.
5. look wide and close several times for the final touch.
6. i put over a layer with a huge grain texture i made sometime ago and fix the blendig mode to LINEAR BURN, some 85% opacity. ereased all which was out of the face. this is much better and real than add "noise".
7. crop the final 8x10 inch / 300dpi size.

THE FOLLOWING SAMPLES ARE SOME VERY CLOSEUP CAPTURE. the real look of this pic is a half-body, head is smaller. anyway, if the client wants, this high end could be print up to a poster size. i just want you to see the line age work.
if someone wants the huge grain layer for the work face please let me know and i´ll upload it to rapidshare.
I HOPE YOU´LL LIKE THIS.

Florin,
A very good job on this one. Most of us learn to remove age lines. But, you have done an excellent job in learning to add them back in. The skin looks very realistic, and is likely very close to what would have been in the original image.

Thank you for sharing with us.

good stuff! It would be really nice to have this as one of the manipulation challenges so we could all have a bash and then see how everyone got on.
