Weird banding

Hi guys!

I came across a photo in my question restore my family album... And it's got some pretty weird banding on it. It looks like something that happened when the photo was originally developed.

Is there a good way to fix these areas? I can remove the noise, correct the colors and all that just fine but the banding is proving to be a challenge for me.

Attached is the original, untouched scan. Had to save it at a lossy quality to upload though.

Could not see any easy/quick way of getting rid of the streaks/banding so resorted to manual removal.

• Curves layer to get somewhere near correct colour balance and density
• New Layer - Patch tool, D&B and Colour Replacement tool
• Final Curves layer
• Then decided wall was still too uneven and not wanting to do any further work added blur to wall on new layer

I agree with the need for hand work. Patch tool helpful and content aware in CS5 could be useful too on the wall. Banding appears to be results of fix bath or later contact with chemicals - could even be paper or moisture, but anyways - color correct, dodge and burn.

If the banding is not embedded, is it a scanner problem? If so, would using a camera instead work?

I replaced the background.

Hi.

I tried using the high pass filter to even out the banding. It has worked to some extent but would still require a little cloning to eliminate it altogether.

I use PS7 (which does not have shadow/highlight) maybe this would help.

Old fashioned dodge and burn will effectively eliminate those bands. You will also need to make some global brightness correction and some localized color correction to remove all the color pollution going on in her face. Sample attached is dodge and burn to get rid of band across her forehead.
