Smile Volunteer Photo Rescue Program

The tsunami following the 11th March 9.0 magnitude earthquake in Japan , destroyed livelihoods, homes, possessions and history. As people fled for high ground, often the last thing they tried to save and the first thing they went back to salvage were their photographs. What remains today are thousands of partially damaged, destroyed and lost photos . If you're a very good or near professional restorer looking to get involved, contact: photorescue@hands.org

That is wonderful helen, they need all the help that can be mustered. Perhaps you could also help "guide" other volunteers to the site. After all you are one of the "hot ones," that can garnish more attention than I. Anyway good on you for helping.

Ok sorry Lurch didn't realize they've answered mine within 24 hrs there isn't much photos in the gallery to be restored just a couple, I am still trying to find my way around.

Would this be your first time you've registered with them? if it is you'll have to registered again to be able to download photo for restorations from another part of the forum.

Hope this helps

Hi all, sorry I have not checked back here in a while. The links I originally posted died. I edited the links at the top of the page. I'm don't know why it takes so long to respond to your emails, as I recall it took about a week for photorescue@hands.org to first respond and send me the VolunteerAgreement.pdf to sign and return, then a few days to send the first image to repair. Can you tell me what this "OPR" is you all are speaking of (give a link.)

Link to an article written by volunteer on the ground in Japan.

OK, I see now. Operation Photo Rescue looks to be a worthy group to volunteer to also. Here again are "Japan: Project Tohoku Photo Rescue Program" and a link to some of their on the ground work posted on Flickr. Also, a link to "Facebook Photo Rescue Japan."

Well Lurch, all I know is that a friend told me about "Japan: Project Tohoku Photo Rescue Program." As I recall it did take "awhile" for them to get back with me, long enough that I called my friend and asked her if she had an idea why it was taking so long for a response. Of course she didn't know. I have since determined "All Hands Volunteers" appears to be a mid-sized (5,867 volunteers from 40+ countries 14+ projects in 6 years) organization. The people in charge of the "Tohoku Photo Rescue Program" in Japan seems to be a rather small team of two or three individuals. This is, I think, why it takes awhile for a response. Thank you for you interest in this project, I know they really need the help.
