Restoring a Watercolour

I have photographed this water colour painted by my great grandfather in 1922 and would appreciate advice as to what to do without changing things too much. Can the signature be incorporated in some way - it appears to be inserted on a piece of card. I intend to print copies and frame for my family.

Re: Restoring a Watercolour

I remember your post a while back about getting a chance to photograph this. What a nice thing to have to remember your great grandfather. Those are some rough waves, and I want to tell those two kids in the front of the rowboat to sit down. Ha.

I'll let the experts advise about restoration, but the painting is quite nice!

Re: Restoring a Watercolour

It does not seem to need much restoring as only parts without much detail seem to have a bit of a shade. The signature could be lifted from the current background and superimposed on an extended wave, but the current signature is incomplete. With a bit larger image it shouldn't be a lot of work.

Re: Restoring a Watercolour

I meant to extend a wave a bit, to replace the cardboard background of the signature.

Maverick,
Do you have the full signature showing in another picture, or was it blocked by the frame in all photos?

Re: Restoring a Watercolour

Couldn't you scan or take a good picture of the signature, remove the background to a transparent layer and layer it over the scan/picture of the watercolor?
