CTEIN Scratch Removal

Hi,
This is an old thread that can be found here.
http://www.retouchpro.com/forums/sho...ferrerid=38677

I have tried with not much success to follow these instructions to apply them to a badly scratched photo I have. I also have studied CTEIN's book....and still scratching my head.

In this thread, "Lurch" posted a screen shot of her layers. I get stuck at the third and fourth layer and cannot work out how she has done them.

First and Second Layers are original and duplicate. Then follows the third layer, a curve layer with a channel mask named "darken cracks" This is the one that has me stumped. Then how does she get the next layer with the original photo and a median layer mask????, but then stumped again with the merge vis copy. It seems to have a layer mask again.

I understand the next b&w layer, and the merge vis layer. But I don't understand the degrunge layer.

If someone could kindly take the time and spell out the steps, I would really appreciate it.

Re: CTEIN Scratch Removal

Ctein's book is still in print and can be had at Amazon.

That said, I tried a split frequency technique, separating the cracks (high frequency) with the tone of the skin/background ( low frequency or the color layer) and it might be a promising technique. You have to heal the cracks on the HF layer and blur or heal on the LF layer. It is time consuming, but may have promise. The old Ctein thread's photo example has a lot of jpeg artifacts in it so it was hard to get a definitive test with this method. I am going to try and find an image with those thousands of cracks to test with. Anyone have a hi-rez image they can link to?
