Question Removing Red Spots from Aged Photos

Working with some photos that are forty plus years, and they have discolored red spots appearing on the photos.

I desperately need help in the spot removal process. I am working in CS 5. The spot healing/clone method would take forever, and will not look so good in the end.

Attached photo to show the spots.

Any directions as to how to use channels or levels for this type correction would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Removing Red Spots from Aged Photos

I used the B&W
Moved the yellow & red sliders to the right (what looks best to you)
Then used a noise filter .

Re: Removing Red Spots from Aged Photos

Thank you for your input, and I hadn't even thought in terms of the black and white conversion process.

Problem though is that some of the photos are in color and I want to retain the color of the photo but lose the red spots.

Re: Removing Red Spots from Aged Photos

VCooper thank you.. It took me awhile to figure this one out.. I tried Hue/sat or Lab mode or other ways.. but I realized I needed to look at the red spots on a pixel by pixel level to see what is going on.

1. Make a copy first (never work on the background). Zoom in all the way and look at the red spots.
2. Change your eyedropper from 3x3 to point setting so you can get the exact pixel color. Notice how the red spots are red, but also equal amounts of blue and green...
3. Go to image > adjustments > replace color and on the top part select the offending pixel and on the bottom part select the pixel color you want it to be..usually next to the red pixel.. don't go to far from the red pixel.
4. Adjust the fuzziness slider..but be careful a little move can make a big impact.. try the preview button several times.. I never went above 40 and stayed usually very low and try to be consistant with each red pixel. Just because you don't see anything with the fuzziness slider does not mean it is not selecting anything.
5. You will notice this requires a lot of going back to the image menu and selecting replace color.... so I went to Edit > Keyboard shortcuts > application menu > replace color and used CTRL + SHIFT + U (which is the desaturate command, but I rarely use and can always change it back when I am done. Don't forget!
6. save a lot so you don't loose all that hard work!!
7. I did the same for the yellow spots too.. Very IMportant.. make a selection first and use replace color so you don't affect the whole image just what you are working on.
8. I use a gaussian blur to soften it, but at the same time use a mask to bring back the eye, mouth, nost, hair.
9. Once you reduce a lot of those spots, you can use on a separate layer the spot healing brush and work its magic... try the patch tool on creases or hard parts..since the spot healing brush can create smears sometimes..
10. Lastly,,, I added a color balance adjustment for the green vest and masked it in... little sharpening and a dash of luck...

Hope it works for you... Yes there are always other ways..but for me this worked..

Re: Removing Red Spots from Aged Photos

Thank you for your quick response. It seems that when I try the the color replacement tool, very few if any of the spots are removed, am I missing a step or something, or is this process lengthy?? LOL
