Getting Rid of Blue Iridescence From Old Photo

I've scanned this photo into Photoshop CS6 (Mac) and have already fixed blemishes, but I have no idea as to how to remove the blue iridescence from what should be the blackest parts of the pic. This showed up as a sheen on the original photo. I would like to leave all other colors exactly as they are. Rescanning the image is not an option as I no longer have the original in my possession. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's called silvering; it results from the silver in the paper's emulsion migrating to the surface. It's common in early 20th-century prints.

Black-and-white is the easiest route.

I used Topaz BW Effects 2 (though I"m sure any number of tools would work), setting blue/cyan sensitivity to pretty much nothing and adding a yellow filter to finish the job, then added the tint back in with a color layer in PS. If you don't care about the tint, obviously, you can skip that step.

Re: Getting Rid of Blue Iridescence From Old Photo

As I recall, Wayne Palmer had an amazing technique for this in the show he did for us (rental available on the video page). It's been awhile so I'm a bit fuzzy on the particulars, but as I recall he simply used Color Range to select Blues, then made a Levels adjustment layer and changed its blend mode to Difference (no actual adjustment is made). The result was subtle, so he duped the layer another 4 or 5 times and the silvering totally disappeared. He demonstrates that this won't work on 100% of images, but I remember being totally blown away.

Ctein's "Tarnished Lady" show addresses the problem in a more traditional way that would work on all images.

Used Selective color and Hue Saturation to remove the blue cast, then use a Brush in darken mode to remove the rough look, maintaining the original color. took about 5 minutes.

Wow! These are all great solutions. Now I just have to decide which one to use. I will post back with my final edit and let you know which one worked the best for me. Until then, I'd like to thank everyone who posted solutions.

Re: Getting Rid of Blue Iridescence From Old Photo

Final Result - I used DKCoats method of editing in b/w adjustments. Set cyan and blue filters to -111 each, and boosted yellow to 100 and red to 50 to slightly brighten it. Adding the tint back in was as easy as clicking the "tint" box in the same window and adjusting hue and sat to match as closely to the original as possible. I liked this method the best as it left the most detail that the original photo had. It worked beautifully! Thank you DKCoats for your help and to everyone else for your suggestions.
