Need help adjusting light area of old photo

I have a photo of my grandparent and I am trying to correct the highlighted area of the photo. Can anyone give me some advice on how to correct it?

What photo editing software do you have available such as Lightroom or Photoshop?

If you're using Photoshop, you can do it with curves and levels.

Re: Need help adjusting light area of old photo

I did a global levels adjustment to add some contrast then took it into camera raw and used the graduated filter to bring down the brightness on the right side and some well placed radial filters to bring down more areas of brightness on the right of the image. Of course this also brought out all the other flaws in the photo.

Thanks for adjusting this, much appreciated! I use Photoshop and I tried various ways to adjust but just could not get it to look right. I will also try the steps that you did and see if I can also do it on my own. That way I can learn the process. Thanks again!

Re: Need help adjusting light area of old photo

Thanks for the help on this. I am trying to replicate your process with the layers/multiply and it is starting to take shape. There is one section of the photo (top right angling down to left) that is a bit tough to blend but I will get there. Thanks for the help. Love learning new techniques!

Re: Need help adjusting light area of old photo

Rather than duplicating an image layer over and over, simply add just about any type of adjustment layer (without making any adjustment) and apply the appropriate blend mode. Your file size will not grow nearly as quickly. Here I've added a masked levels adj layer set to multiply mode to darken the image and duplicated it a few times to increase darkening. Another levels layers to adjust the overall contrast. A b/w adj layer with an appropriate tint for color toning. And finally a dodge/burn layer to selectively lighten/darken. Good luck.
