I guess I don't want to introduce a texture that wasn't there in the original but I'm curious and if you want to post an example, I'd like to see.

You can replace the grid texture with random grain/noise in the hf layer in the highlights. Something should be there just not the grid pattern.

ok, I did intend to put a random noise/grain pattern over the entire image when I finished, but would putting it on top and clipped to the highlights in the hi frequency layer be much different?

I would go over all with grain. But highlights may require extra. You'll have to make that decision while viewing at 100% in ps.

Re: how do I remove paper texture from old photo

Hi Caravaggio
Strange that the links pulled up a server error. I have actually tried again and can download the files so something seems amiss. It occurs to me that there could be two potential causes.

1. The servers were actually down at the times that you tried
Or
2. Something in your setup either Mac or Network (av or anti malware?) may be preventing connection

I downloaded the Mac versions to my PC to double check and all went well so I would suggest you try again.

New direct link for Joofa which should take you to a page where the link says "download the plugins'. The file is named JoofaPSMacCC2015F.dmg
http://www.djjoofa.com/download/fft_mac_ps_cc_2015

ImageJ link should take you to a page with this section
Download imageJ (6MB) as a double-clickable Mac OS X application. Also available bundled with Java 1.8.0_91 (requires OS X 10.8 or later). Instructions.
https://imagej.nih.gov/ij/download.html

Hope you have more success
As to the stripes/ribbing texture apparent in the sleeves of the image but missing in other areas due to clipping, you may want to try and fake this texture very lightly to give an impression of detail

Re: how do I remove paper texture from old photo

Thank you Tony so much for your help and patience! I do have the imageJ app installed now. The image is open in Image J but when I go to "process' and choose FFT it brings up a log dialogue box that says 'Out of memory'. I'll reduce the size of the image in photoshop and make a duplicate copy just because I want to see the FFT filter work!

Something seems to be up with the djoofa as others noted in the comments section for the instructions video on using the Joofa FFT filter that they are getting the same message that I got, 'unable to talk to the server' when they try to register the product. I haven't tried your new link to the djoofa yet and maybe I'll have better luck with that.

Re: how do I remove paper texture from old photo

Tony, I ran the Image J on a smaller sized copy of the file. This time I was able to run the FFT this time without getting the memory warning. I couldn't find any instructions on using imageJ FFT, so used this video as a guide.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1O98GKpR6CU

I didn't get very good results compared to yours, in fact it made the entire image look blurry.

I'm wondering which FFT you used, imageJ or DJoofa in the example you posted?

Thanks.

Re: how do I remove paper texture from old photo

The FFT filter I used was the one posted in the thread by Cadencia and uploaded to a new server by Chain BUT it is Windows only.

There are image size and memory restraints afaik with all FFT versions. I have to say that I am not 100% sure of the following for ImageJ but it may help

1. Allocate more memory Edit/Options/Memory and threads

2. It may perform better with a square image. Therefore consider enlarging canvas to the max dimension and use content aware to fill in the blanks on each side

3. Worst case scenario, split the image into squares of no more than 4096 pixels and treat each separately then stitch together

Some old tips ImageJ: HERE
