Re: how do I remove paper texture from old photo

Thanks for the link to the old tips. That helped and I'm getting better results now. I choose a section of the image and cropped it to 4000 x 4000 pixels so I'm now only doing a portion of the image. It is strange that some parts of the image come out very well after running FFT and other parts of the image it damages or messes up, but overall it is very good at removing that grid pattern.

I can see that it might be good to paste the section that I processed in imageJ back into the larger image in photoshop and mask out the bad parts. It is interesting software and I'm glad I discovered it and want to explore it more.

Edit: After I wrote this, I over-layed the FFT processed image on top of the original. There is some sort of blurring going on that I don't like. It looks similar to as if you had run a sort of low radius motion blur from a diagonal direction to remove the grid.

Hi Caravaggio
Late to the game on this thread.
Here is my try with FFT, then Dust and Scratch filter and a couple spots with ACR healing brush. I could link a higher quality JPEG version if needed.

looks good, John. Which FFT did you use?

Re: how do I remove paper texture from old photo

Hi Caravaggio

I don't think it matters which FFT is used, yet how the FFT is used makes a difference. I used the Joofa FFT software on a Mac

There are two keys to reduce anomalies and blur when using an FFT

a) To reduce funny patterns on the edges, I expand the canvas 30% relative, select the transparent boundary created with no antialias, and then do a content aware fill with no expansion of the selection area (just crop this area out after the procedure is complete). The run the FFT procedure

b) Make sure that the painted in black spots are exactly symmetrical. This makes sure it only removes specific 2D high frequency patterns. If you do not use a symmetrical black out pattern is the most common source of introducing blur.

Hope this helps

Re: how do I remove paper texture from old photo

I am just finishing up my first restoration project; images are to be used in a birthday slideshow of a woman turning 70. The images are a mix of decades but a number are before 1965, all in need of major repair - rips, stains, blurry, etc. Through a combination of efforts I have tried to tackle the honeycomb / paper texture removal issue, and am about 70% satisfied by the turnout.

How great to pick up on this post about FFT, which I never heard of. After some Googling on FFT it seems like a better approach to noise / texture cancellation than my combinations of using PS filters Find Edges / Dust & Scratches / Median / Surface Blur / HiPass and plugins NeatImage & Noiseware (note: I am still figuring out my workflow here). The Joofa plugin wouldn't install for me, licensing issues - I wrote the developer for help.

But ImageJ, wow, it offers a lot of serious finetuning. Yay, it's free. However, it seems like it's going to take some studying up on before I can use it. Any tutorial suggestions? I did watch the Joofa tutorial on youtube, it was helpful on a very introductory level on how to use FFT / IFFT to reduce texture.

I only saw the first page of this thread, before I posted. Yay, some of my concerns already addressed.

Thanks,

Alreese, Could you let us know if you hear back from the Joofa developer and when you can register your copy? I encountered the same problem. Thanks.

Re: how do I remove paper texture from old photo

From reading the comments on here and the ones posted on his Youtube tutorial, I don't think the Joofa developer is getting back to me anytime soon; at least he hasn't responded at all to anyone who has had the same "unable to talk to server" problem, and there have been lots of folks.

This link explains the ImageJ method super clear:
http://forensicphotoshop.blogspot.co...e-removal.html

A plugin for the (Intel based) Mac version of Photoshop would be great, from reading elsewhere on the net, people have been asking for one since like 2006 or earlier since the switch from the Mac PowerPC. But ImageJ does the job, it's just masking the FFT result is a pain b/c the tools for masking, best said by this guy here: "The painting and airbrush tools in ImageJ are, to be nice, very MacPaint circa 1988."

Good luck!
