New and need help - photo on glass?

I just brought this home from my grandma's house.
This portrait is on the front of this little piece of glass and the back apparently had some type of black paint that has mostly worn off.
I scanned this with black cardstock behind it to make the protrait distinguishable from the paint on the back.
How should I start with this?

Good idea on the cardstock btw!

First thing I did was crop down the image so I wasn't dealing with as much noise from the background (which you would eventually replace anyway).

Then I worked on the levels to bring out some detail. You're lucky this picture still has a lot of detail left in it!

After that I would start on the cloning/healing stamp work. I've done a little bit to show an example.

At the moment I am using PSP8. Is the healing stamp (I am assuming photoshop) the same as cloning?
I tried a little but I got a bit impatient and ended up smoothing out too much and the pic lost some of it's original appeal. I will try again before I post it.
I like how you cleaned some of it up but not tooooo much.

No the healing stamp is different. I'm not sure if there is a tool that does the same in PSP.

Someone else might know You can do most of it with a clone stamp too however, the healing stamp just is a time saver, not a neccesity

Welcome to RP!

... I also work with Photoshop only so, I stopped with my 'restoration' just about where Noel did...

I also used the Levels (on each individual Channel) to brighten up the picture and bring out more details ....

I desaturated the picture ... and only used the Dust&Scratches Tool to start cleaning the girl's face ....

Hope somebody using PSP will jump in and help you more ...
