Photo to look like painting on canvas

I have looked through all the filters to make a photograph look like it is painted on canvas without any luck. I am using PS6 can anyone help with a suggestion?

I am not familiar with Photoshop 6, but if it has the pattern stamp tool (behind clone tool) you can use it. First enhance your picture with levels etc. Then define it as a pattern (edit - define pattern). Then make a new layer, choose the pattern stamp tool, choose the pattern you defined at top and a oil brush. You can probably find some free brushes if you don't have it.

Ben, you might try an approach that has worked for me:

Create a new layer and fill with your background color. Run a filter on that layer to create your canvas texture and then duplicate it. Not sure exactly which filters are availabe in PS6, but I think you can find something to give the desired effect.

Now you can make a "filter sandwich" by placing one copy of your canvas over your photo and one under. Change the blending modes of both the photograph (try Dissolve or Normal,) and your top background copy (try Darken, Multiply, Color Dodge....try them all!)

"...look like it is painted..." has a wide degree of interpretation.

There are numerous methods for Photoshop that will take you in that direction, but IMO none that are top notch. You just can't get a truly painted look using filters and plugins.

For the highest quality results where realistic looking brushstrokes can be simulated, especially if you intend to print your artwork, investigate the Corel Painter program.
