softlight layers, healing, curves..
I am working on the "gloss" as you call it. Although I'm a little unclear what that means..

thanks james...this was an interesting photo to work on. I love dark/contrast heavy/textured images as well. And I know what you mean about your friend thinking she looks like the retouch "all the time"--- I don't think anyone in my family has seen a straight out of the camera shot of themselves in atleast a year I never make it obvious to where they would notice, but who doesn't like to see their skin a little smoother, etc...

Mild Cloning to repair some of the artifacts/noise in the facial skin - overlay set at 60%
Colour Dodge in Highlights

And then a warmer version from the before photo.

Tried to make the lighting a little more dramatic.

Hi, here's my try, not sure if that is what you're looking for though...
I cropped it because I thought the right hand is ruining composition.
And I changed that shadow in background... not sure that it looks good now.
I hope I didn't overdo it...

Hey, I wanna play too!

1) Degrunged

2) In LAB, corrected the forehead glare (Luminosity curve);

3) Made a Gradient Map to match the skin, and masked this in to correct the blown-out yellows;

4) Brought out more detail in the hair using an Adaptive Equalization layer with Soft Light blending masked in;

5) Masked in a Levels adjustment to darken the outside (vignette);

6) In RGB, auto-levels layer, varying opacity to taste.
