**Newbie** How would you get this effect

Hi,

Firstly, ive been reading many posts for the last few days and picked up many tips and tutorials which i will be using no doubt....excellent site and awesome posts.....thanks.

i want to recreate the effect in this picture on a picture for a friend.....the gems and sequences have been highlighted and have a sort of glow effect.....im not sure if this was done with lighting or if it has been retouched digitally.

any help would be really appreciated...the pic is here:

Give Filter/Distort/Diffuse Glow a try, I think this might be the trick

thanks....will take a shot at it tonight....at work at the mo.

the diffuse glow > wouldnt that diffuse the whole image?

its just the gems that need glowing

You could mask the effect to only affect the parts of the image that you want it on.

You can make just about anything look like it's glowing if you create a curve adjustment layer with the curve adjusted up to brighten things by two or three stops (in Photoshop, I guess you could also use the exposure adjuster.) Then apply a black mask to the curve. Then brush the things you want to glow.

Other ways to accenuate glowing would be to dodge glowing items and also paint using a starburst-shaped brush which you can download from Adobe exchange.

Xero has free filtres and that one looks just like the "Porcelain" filtre. I use it all the time. It gives off the glow and leaves a wee bit of bluish tinge to the image.

This one looks like it was given the Porcelain filtre with a deeper intensity.

Just type in "Xero Filtres" (or Filters depending on your location) and it should take you to their site.

A simple and very effective way is to make a luminocity selection. Go into quick mask mode and apply levels to it until you have as much highlight as you would like. Duplicate it to a new layer and adjust the brightness to make it brighter. Add a little blur and voila.
