Thanks! Here's a posting of a close-up. There is no gaussian blur applied, just blood and tears.

Great job TheVeed! What did you use the dust and scratches filter for? And what do you mean by 'just blood and tears? Thanks!

I love it Veed. I am trying your method right now on the original pic. I have been busy on it for almost three hours now and I am not nearly finished. Unlike you I am not including breaks in that time. That is solid work time (or play time, however, you look at it). Also it doesn't look nearly as good as yours. Interestingly I was convinced you had added some noise to the picture but now I see I am getting the same effect from B&D, particularly on the shadow side of the face. I am not sure if this is because there was just shadow noise there before and now it is being exposed because I am dodging it or if there is some other phenomenon at work. It is taking for ages and I still have the whole left side of her face to do. I hardly want to post it now after I see what you have done on the two new pictures. But I shall keep my word and post it. So far I have only used a Soft Light layer to dodge and burn. No clone, no healing brush...nothing else. Excellent work again Veed.

Okay, well, I finally did it. A marathon D&B session...well, certainly longer than anything I have ever done before. A full five hours. My fingers feel like arthritic claws after all that clicking. Although, not perfect I am quite pleased with the results. It is the smallest Photoshop file I have have ever made. The background original, a D&B layer, a sharpening layer and a contrast layer. Not once did I resort to the clone tool or the the healing brush. All the retouching was done on a Soft Light layer with a 5-10% opacity brush. Nothing more. No blurs, no smudging. Nothing. Honest.

Syd, it looks great! Good job! Looks just like a glamour retouch job. It's annoying retouching, cuz it's so tedious, but u did a greaaat job.
