Your colorization techniques

I'd like to get a catalog of your favorite colorization techniques. Some work better with particular images than others. For example, painting on a layer set to Color blend doesn't work particularly well on highlights or deep shadows. And what about blended areas, such as hairlines? There are "realistic" looks, and more stylized approaches.

Post here with your favorite, perhaps with an example or two.
