| | | How are Schoellers Close Up Pictures Retouched? The "close up" series of celebs are great pictures, I believe shot on medium format film (NPZ 800?), great attention to detail regards lighting etc. I just wondered if you guys noticed any retouching ? very subtle if there is. How could you recreate these pictures do you think ?
Thanks |

the only way to recreate it, is to use the same lighting as he does, just looking at one image tells you exactly what he is using for all of them. |

| | | Re: How are Schoellers Close Up Pictures Retouched? Schoellers uses old and very unusual continuous lights used in cinematography. These are very hard lights that accentuate skin textures and imperfections. So these images are more to do with lighting than retouching. |

| | | Re: How are Schoellers Close Up Pictures Retouched? what is meant by 'continuous lighting'? and if anyone would care to link to a basic photography lighting site or tutorial, i'd love to see it. i'm familiar with some types and techniques, but it would be nice to have a good, reference page to see. |

| | | Re: How are Schoellers Close Up Pictures Retouched? His Close-ups are most likely KINO flows.. the flourescent tubes.. But the same effect can be created with softboxes..
But Kino's have that special light...From the shot's I saw they are not harsh cinema lighting at all.. Actually really soft lighting...

| | | Re: How are Schoellers Close Up Pictures Retouched? He uses Kinos and Profoto for lighting. I've watched him print in the rental darkroom and he is real precise in his dodging and burning of the actual c prints many variations all marked up to map out what he has to do in the dark. |

| | | Re: How are Schoellers Close Up Pictures Retouched? If I remmeber correctly, he told interviewer from a magazine that he used old, special continuous lights from cinematography. (can't remmeber if it was Kino but i think it was kind of flurescent lights) He actually said that it was the harsh quality of the light creating "that look"....If you have ever seen the large print of Angela Josie taken by him, you will see how harsh and unflattering these lights were...every pores and lines of her beautiful face are accentuated. My guess you would probably reproduce such effects with two kinos without diffusion or light sticks from Broncolor or Profoto.
BTW Kinos are used often in cinematography and there are many different designs and discharge tubes other than what you see in still photography.
