I'd say the best way is how the folks on this and other sites have done it: searching for everything you can possibly find on the subject (it's the internet, after all... Google works) and experimenting with as many different images as you can beg, borrow steal or, ideally, create yourself.

Face it, if those kinds of results were able to be distilled into a few pointers and a tutorial or two, everyone would do it and no one would consider sites like the one you referenced anything special.
