She confirmed my suspicions from his behind the scenes vids; she says he does light all of his subjects separately (at least on the shoot she worked with).

Here is my take on the Dave Hill effect. I did not light separately:

I have other images that may have bee better to use but since everything takes time, this is what you get

First I pushed the tone setting around in lightroom before export (no exact formula, different image different settings). I used NIC, Lucis 6, PS shadow highlight, D&B. That is not the exact recipe, but it is close as I can remember from when processed it.

Also, due to file limitations a lot of tonal detail... is lost in the posted image.
You can download backstage videos from the Dave Hill website. There are like 30 videos more or less, and most of them are about the images you can see in his website

Cool Re: The demystification of dave hill! let's all he

Hello friends, I am new to this forum, and I have read the entire forum from page 1, and I have to say it really is awesome seeing people go a long way with the DH Look. It is hard to do when you don't have sharp photos to begin with. Like so many contributors have said numerous times in this forum... "It is all in the lighting" they are 100% correct, and for those of you that are struggling, just keep practicing. Hopefully people will take the similar look of DH that they make and turn it into something of their own. I am a huge fan of your work Calvin Hollywood for example, and no you don't have bad english :p

Here is my humble attempt at this look, more to come soon, and this is done with mostly lighting and compositing/d&b/ and raw editing.

I do have lucisart and trust me, you will grow out of it like I did.
